Uses :

Flameproofing of textiles, paper and plastics (chiefly polyvinyl chloride); paint pigments; ceramic opacifier; catalyst; intermediate; staining iron and copper; phosphors; mordant; glass decolouriser.

2. HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION


2.1 Health Effects - Acute

Swallowed

Causes gastrointestinal irritation with nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. May cause slow pulse, low blood pressure, bloody stool, shallow breathing, coma, convulsion and possible death.

Eye

Contact produces irritation, tearing, and burning pain. May cause conjunctivitis.

Skin

Causes skin irritation. Repeated or prolonged skin contact may cause antimony measles characterised by itchy papules and pustules around the sweat and fat glands.

Inhaled

Causes respiratory tract irritation. Inhalation of fumes may cause metal fume fever which is characterised by flu-like symptoms with metallic taste, fever, chills, cough, weakness, chest pain, muscle pain and increased white blood cell count.

2.2 Health Effects - Chronic

Prolonged inhalation may cause respiratory tract inflammation and lung damage. Prolonged or repeated skin contact may cause dermatitis. May cause cancer in humans.

2.3 First Aid

Swallowed

Induce vomiting. If victim is conscious and alert, give 2-4 cupfuls of milk or water. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Seek medical attention immediately.

Eye

Immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes occasionally lifting the uppe and lower lids. Seek medical attention.

Skin

Get medical aid. Flush skin with plenty of soap and water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes.

Inhaled

Remove from exposure to fresh air immediately. If not breathing give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Seek medical attention.

First Aid Facilities

Ensure an eye bath and safety shower are available and ready for use.

2.5 Advice to Doctor

The use of Dimercaprol or BAL (British Anti-Lewisite) as a chelating agent should be determined by qualified medical personnel. Treat symptomatically based on judgement of doctor and individual reactions of patient.

3. PRECAUTIONS FOR USE


3.1 Exposure Standards

Worksafe recommends the following exposure standard : Antimony trioxide, handling and use (as Sb) TWA : 0.5 mg/m3.

3.2 Engineering Controls

Use adequate general or local exhaust ventilation to keep airborne concentrations below the permissable exposure limits.

3.3 Personal Protection

Wear appropriate protective eyeglasses or chemcial safety goggles, butyl rubber gloves and boots, cotton overalls and all-purpose canister respirator. Wash hands and face thoroughly after handling and before work breaks, eating, drinking, smoking and using toilet facilities.

3.4 Flammability

Material is non-flammable.

Transport or store in a cool, dry place away from incompatible substances. Minimise dust generation and accumulation. Avoid contact with heat, sparks and flame. No special transport or storage requirements.

4.3 Spills and Disposal

Spills

Clean-up personnel should wear full protective clothing including self-contained breathing apparatus. Avoid raising dust. Remove all sources of ignition.

Vacuum or sweep up material and place into a suitable disposal container. DO NOT wash untreated material down the drain or sewer. If material is not contaminated, reuse the material.

Disposal

Purify and reuse, or dispose of in accordance with all Local, State and Federal regulations at an approved waste disposal facility.

4.4 FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARD

Fire / Explosion

Will not burn or explode. Material is stable. Incompatible with bromine trifluoride, acid, oxidisers, halogenated agents, and chlorinated rubber at high temperatures. Conditions to avoid include incompatible materials, ignition sources and excess heat. Hazardous decomposition products include antimony and antimony oxides. Hazardous polymerisation has not been reported.

Extinguishing Media

Fire-fighters should wear full protective clothing including self-contained breathing apparatus. For small fires use dry chemical, carbon dioxide, water spray or alcohol-resistant foam type extinguishers. Use equipment/media appropriate to surrounding fire conditions.
